STATHI Katsidis has emerged as the new rider for Toowoomba mare Gold Edition in Saturday's group 1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.
A return clash with the Lee Freedman-trained and Corey Brown-ridden Here De Angels awaits in the Manikato after Here De Angels maintained his unbeaten record when scoring over Gold Edition in the McEwen Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday week."Stathi won the Queens Cup and the Tatts Cup on Ice Chariot for Gold Edition's owners up in Brisbane in the winter so, with Damien Oliver being rubbed out [suspended], Stathi has earned the chance to get on Gold Edition," trainer Ron Maund said. "He is going to be based in Melbourne for six weeks over the carnival so he can be our rider."Maund said Gold Edition had been ticking along well since the McEwen Stakes and, while he had "a healthy respect" for Here De Angels, he was adamant he was not scared of him."We've never dodged any horse with Gold Edition yet and we won't start now," he said, then quipped: "If there was a hurdle race suitable for her, we'd send her around."Maund reasoned there were excuses for the last-start defeat of Gold Edition."She was back behind a couple of rabbits that were in front and we thought they'd go 800 metres and stop but they couldn't even get 600m before they were dropping back in her face," he said. "Instead of being out and rolling and putting a length on the rivals on turning, she was zigzagging and trying to get a run. She was going backwards when she should have been going forwards. I was happy with the run."Darren Beadman won the Magic Millions Trophy on Gold Edition earlier this year but he will be on the Freedman-trained Universal Queen in the Manikato Stakes.
