TOOWOOMBA tornado Gold Edition added another chapter to her already spectacular career by trouncing her rivals in the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy for three-year-olds yesterday.
The Ron Maund-trained wonder filly was ridden to advantage by champion jockey Darren Beadman. She dispelled theories she was suspect at 1400m by winning by five lengths.Gold Edition had never won over more than 1200m before yesterday. She was controversially beaten into second place as an odds-on favourite at Doomben in the lead-up to the Magic Millions, with Maund sacking jockey Jim Byrne."She was a class act today with a class act riding her," Maund said. "You've seen a special racehorse today."Beadman was contacted by a Maund stable representative for the Gold Edition ride and initially thought it was a practical joke. But when Maund rang Beadman himself, Sydney's leading rider jumped at the chance to unite with the group 1 winner."She's right up there with the best fillies I've ridden," Beadman said."She did that so easily, won with her head on her chest. She was never going to lose." Gold Edition has had 21 starts for 11 wins and has amassed $1.8 million in stakes. The iron filly campaigned in Sydney last autumn, in Brisbane in the winter and then in Melbourne in the spring. She won the group 1 Ascot Vale Stakes on Victoria Derby day and backed up five days later to win another straight 1200m event at Flemington. "She just keeps showing up and loves racing," Maund said."The horse will let us know if she wants a break. But Sydney is a definite option in the autumn again." Maund wasn't the slightest bit concerned about Gold Edition not having won at 1400m at three previous tries. Beadman also gave him a lift."When the jockey told me before the race it was a one-horse race I started to get a bit confident," he said.Beadman said Gold Edition ($4.20) was "a mighty, mighty filly"."She puts herself in a position to dictate," he said. "I wish they could all win like that."Race favourite Publishing ($2.40) enjoyed the run of the race behind Gold Edition, with jockey Michael Rodd reporting there must be something amiss. "He got on the wrong leg when they turned for home, then balanced up again and was gone in a stride," Rodd said. It was left to the Bryan Guy-trained Grand Reve ($17) to finish second, a length in front of Sequential Charm ($8).
